Letter to Mayor

Dear Mayor,

My name is Brandon Carlson. I am writing this letter with the simple mission of raising awareness about the importance of keeping Washington DC clean. As the nation’s capital it is vital that Washington DC presents itself as an example of the image that the United States as a whole wants to portray to the rest of the world. With that in mind, it is vital to bring to society’s attention the issue that Washington DC is not as clean as it should be. Its streets are flooded with old party and political flyers, beer bottles, coke cans, car tires, strewn garbage, and other things that make its streets look destitute. The initiative to bring a more beautiful city should not be hard to create when the community is made aware that improvement can and will be made. Howard University students are a perfect example of how far a recycling initiative can go. There is currently a “go green” initiative that motivates and maintains the idea of doing everything in a more environmentally friendly way. The students obviously value keeping their campus clean and have done things like place recycling bins in high traffic areas, encouraged less printing in the information lab to decrease the amount of paper used by implementing a system where you must pay for printing past the set limit. Signs can be found in dormitories as a reminder to unplug any electronic devices being used, turn off your lights, and also your television. By using the example the students have given, our city can take the steps towards becoming a more aesthetic one. The tourist’s attractions are noticeably impeccably clean, but if we took the same energy and placed it in more urban areas, Washington DC would become even greater, and the it could possibly have a more positive effect on the community. By creating cleaner streets, we can develop a better environment, for the children, their families, and our community as a whole.
