A More Perfect Union

There is an old saying that 'in order for a person to know where he is going, he must also know where he came from." People in general tend to have strong emotional ties to the past for various reason. African-Americans in particular come from a history that is filled with much pain and suffering, and because of this, their emotional attachment to the past is that much more difficult to break. Barack Obama's "A More Perfect Union" speech marked the beggining of, for the first time in America's history, an open dialogue about race relations in America. For a long time, race has been a topic saved for dinner table conversation and Sunday morning sermons. Now that the dialogue has been opened, we not only as African Americans, but as Americans alike can begin to heal from the painful bruises and scars left by the past and do the best we can in the present so that we may better our future.
